The genus Herminium with Eurasian distribution and consists of about 20 species including one species found in northern Europe.
Musk Orchid – Herminium monorchis
Musk Orchid can be found in calcareous marshland, meadows and pastures. Musk Orchid previously been found in Ostfold, Vestfold, Telemark, Hedmark and Dovre, Vaga, Al in Buskerud and Ardal in Sogn. It is now our most rare species and currently known only from two to three localities at Hvaler in Ostfold.l Musk Orchid will be pollinated of small insects like parasitic wasps, beetles and small flies, but rarely seed capsules. After flowering shoots stolons forming new tubers and may form populations of thousands of plants. It has two yellow-green leaves which is pointed, broad and 2 to 10 cm long. Specimens up to 10 cm high. The inflorescence is narrow with small yellow-green flowers without spur. The lip is narrowing triangular with short splayed side flap on each side and flower scents strongly of honey. Musk Orchid is protected under the Nature Diversity Act. Ranked as critically endangered in Norwegian Red List and is likely to be extinct in a few years (my remark).
